In light of the current COVID19 crisis and shelter in place, the NMC-CESI team wanted to provide resources to our community through translating key information such as instructions for the CERB application!

An amazing volunteer team has translated the instructions and online application for the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB) available through the Canada Revenue Agency. Please share with any community members or groups that might benefit from this, those who have lost their income / job may be entitled to financial support!❤️

A dear friend and dedicated volunteer

CESI is now recruiting new team members from within the University of Toronto student body, including executive members at large, but also specifically to fill the two positions. Click to read about them.

CESI is a student-led educational and humanitarian initiative created by students and faculty at the Department of Near & Middle Eastern Civilizations at the University of Toronto. Since April 2016, this initiative has served as a springboard for Syrian newcomer youth who need help with language acquisition, are interested in continuing their studies, and are looking for support in their settlement process. CESI’s weekly workshops are unique in their “exchange” principle: UofT students learn Arabic from Syrian newcomers, who learn English from UofT students through worksheets on topics related to Canadian society. Our group of volunteers—over 200 members!—also assist with a range of activities and needs across Toronto, helping sponsors and newcomers to communicate and perform necessary tasks for adjustment to life in Canada.

For the 2019-20 academic year CESI is interested in reaching out to newcomer groups in the GTA that would benefit from our programming. Our language exchanges and workshops have typically been designed for Arabic speakers, but we always welcome newcomers from all backgrounds! We’re interested in working with many languages & diasporas as the CESI family grows.
